You will often hear that when taking one vitamin you need to be sure you also take another with it. There are plenty of vitamins and minerals that need to be taken in conjunction with another complimenting vitamin or mineral for absorption and effectiveness. In recent years, there have been plenty of research about the effectiveness of taking a Vitamin D supplement on the health and wellness of the body. And for years doctors have recommended a calcium supplement for an aging population whose bones were weakening and becoming susceptible to fracture. But did you know that Vitamin D is needed for absorption of calcium? It is important to have the right balance. This is true of all nutrients, which is why it's best to get what you need from whole foods, and if you take a supplement that it be a whole food nutritional supplement. Of course, Juice Plus+® is considered that, providing nutrients from 7 different whole food fruits and 8 different whole food vegetables, along with 2 grains. (The Juice Plus+® Vineyard Blend provides nutrients from the whole foods of 9 different grapes and berries). Here's more on what may be happening to some people who are not getting the right balance of these nutrients --
Many physicians recommend their older patients take a 1,000- to 1,500-mg calcium supplement to prevent bone fractures. I think they are recommending too much of a good thing, and not enough of another important nutrient. Most people get some calcium in the foods they eat, yet are deficient in vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium.
The medical literature shows calcium alone decreases total fractures but has a minimum effect on hip fracture, a common problem in the elderly that has potentially deadly implications. In contrast, calcium together with vitamin D markedly reduces hip fractures.
While numerous dietary studies find that people with a diet high in calcium have less high blood pressure and less heart disease, studies of people who take calcium supplements paint a different picture. Research in the British Medical Journal found that if 1,000 people took calcium supplements for five years, they would have 14 more heart attacks, 10 extra strokes, 13 more deaths and 26 fewer bone breaks.
Although baffling, one possible reason for the increase in sickness and deaths lies in how people take medicines — typically many pills at one time. Calcium blocks the body's ability to absorb most medicines including beta-blockers, which many people take to prevent heart attacks. Thus, calcium pills should not be taken with other medicines. I tell my patients that a simple way to add calcium is to eat a six-ounce serving of yogurt each day. Those who prefer pills should take no more than a 500-mg calcium supplement. read more here...
Comments: The key to remember here is that vitamin D is showing tremendous positive influence on the body when taking as a supplement, but that a healthy diet which has the balance of nutrients in the ripe, raw whole foods is the best approach for good health and prevention. That's not to say that you shouldn't add a vitamin D and calcium supplement, but that ripe, raw whole foods are where your good health and the prevention of sickness and disease begins. And if you do supplement your diet, add Juice Plus+® because it provides nutrients from a variety of whole foods.
Always check with your doctor or physician when adding any supplement to your diet or when making any changes to your diet.
