In 2010, Dave will run and aims to successfully complete four 250km, self-supported footraces across the driest, windiest, hottest and coldest places on Earth. The Atacama Desert in Chile, the Gobi Desertin China, the Sahara Desertin Egypt and finally, Antarctica! To date, 41 people in the world have completed the four deserts, only two people have completed them in one year. Dave is not only aiming be the third person in the world to complete the four deserts successfully in 38 weeks, but to be the oldest.
The first race takes place on the 7th March 2010 in the Atacama Desert. This is the driest desert in the world and is over 50 times drier than California's Death Valley. The soil has been compared to that of Mars. The altitude for most of the race will average 2,400 metres, climbing to 3316 metres at the highest point. Often, altitude sickness can affect competitors here. Dave will carry everything on his back during the 6 days of running the 250 km - ie foot, clothes, sleeping bag, medical supplies, survival gear, toiletries, water etc. and Dave's average distance per day will be around 40k with the longest day being almost twice that.
