If your child doesn't eat enough fruits and vegetables, and you're having a tough time making "deals" with them to get them to eat their peas, finish their spinach, or have a salad, then you've got to consider a way to get nutrients from those foods into their system. Dr. Sears says feeding our children the right way is so important from the very beginning. He explains, "the three magic words are 'shape young tastes'. You have that window of opportunity those first couple of years, to get your child on the right track for healthy eating the rest of their life. So, shape young tastes. Surround your child with 'grow' foods." 'Grow' foods are foods rich in nutrients that are good for growing bodies and brains. They fill kids up, and pack a lot of nutrition in a small amount. They are things like:
- avocados
- organic yogurt
- salmon
- blueberries
- broccoli
- sweet potatoes.
When you are serving your kids these types of foods, Dr. Sears says we don't need to worry so much about calorie intake. He also suggests - and, this is age-dependent, of course - setting out nibble trays. Basically trays filled with grow foods ready for your kids to eat. Dr. Sears says grazing is good for the brain because steady blood sugar equals steady behavior.
A couple other tips from Dr. Sears:
- stick to organic when you can. Especially when it comes to dairy, including milk, yogurt and cheese.
- Look for whole grains.
- It's a good idea to set an example for your little ones. Dr. Sears calls it the We Principle. You can show your kids that 'we' eat like this. These habits stick with them for life.
- Avoid foods that have these words on the label: high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated or anything with a number. (source...)
Comments: A healthy diet is even more important during those growth years. The number of kids you have health problems has risen over the decades, most of which can be traced back to a poor diet. You can't expect a child to be healthy when they're consuming soft drinks and fast foods on a regular basis. Keep those types of foods completely out of any diet (including yours!) for the best chance at keeping your health on the positive side of the spectrum. Add plenty of fruits and vegetables instead - and a whole food nutritional supplement until you get a daily regimen consuming the minimum needed of those foods each day - and you've got yourself the makings of a healthy, happy, smart child or at least one who doesn't have the hindrance of variables that you can control.
